Biofilm Control Agents

Biofilm Control Agents are highly effective on inhibiting biofilm formation and on removing accumulated biofilms. For example, the use of biofilm control agent to RO membranes can reduce biofouling (*1) and consequently reduce the frequency of washing and replacement of RO membranes.
*1. Clogging the membrane by biofilms or the other substances derived from bacterial cells

  • BR-105 is a new type of product that has inhibiting effect on biofilm formation, which is not available in existing products (*2).
  • BR-105 has two effects. One is inhibiting biofilm formation and the other is removing accumulated biofilms.
  • BR-105 is non-oxidizing, therefore does not damage any materials.
  • BR-105 is composed of food additives and cosmetic ingredients.
  • There is no need to adjust the pH because BR-105 is effective over a wide range of pH.
   *2. Inhibiting effect on biofilm formation via bacterial cell-cell signaling called quorum sensing.

 ・Biofilm formation is prevented previously by quorum sensing inhibitor.


 ・Accumulated biofilms and fouling substances (*3) are effectively removed by surfactant appropriate
       to biofilm detachment.

Effect of suppressing biofilm formation

 ・Biofilm-forming bacteria (Pseudomonas sp) were cultured in medium containing BR-105.
 ・After incubation, biofilms formed on the wall of the culture plate were stained with crystal violet
       (staining intensity is depend on the amount of biofilms), and the staining intensity of BR-105
       treatment was compared with Blank (without BR-105).

BR-105 can inhibit biofilm formation on various materials such as RO membranes and silicon tubes as well as plastic plate.

Effect of removing biofilms

 ・Biofilm-forming bacteria (Pseudomonas sp) were cultured, and biofilms were preformed on the walls
       of the culture plate.
 ・Incubated after added BR-105 to above culture plate.
 ・Stained residual biofilms on the walls of culture plate with crystal violet (staining intensity is depend
       on the amount of biofilms).
 ・BR-105 was compared with Blank (without BR-105) about intensity of stain (Amount of biofilms).

Effect of suppressing RO-Membrane clogging

 ・BR-105 moderates increase of differential pressure in RO module (*4) by suppressing biofouling.
       (It is expected to extend the time until manual cleaning or membrane change by approximately

 ・Suppression of biofouling on water treatment membranes such as RO membranes.
 ・Measures against biofilms generated in various facilities such as cooling towers, hot springs,
       and bathroom. (Measures against Legionella.)
 ・Measures against biofilms generated in medical devices.
 ・Measures against bacterial infectious diseases caused by biofilms.
